The sixth-annual Latin Salsa Festival will be held on May 25 from 10 a.m. until 8 p.m. at the Fort Walton Landing Park located at 139 Brooks St. SE in downtown Fort Walton Beach. The Caribbean-style festival, presented by Northwest Florida Boricuas Ausentes, Incorporated (NWFBA, Inc.), has grown into a popular celebration for locals and visitors alike. The event includes ethnic foods, a variety of local and out-of-town vendors, fun activities for kids, and the rhythmic sounds of live salsa music radiating throughout the park. Aside from the inviting music and dancing, attendees will also have the opportunity to taste the most delicious and authentic Caribbean cuisine on the Emerald Coast. A diverse group of food, merchandise and service vendors will be selling or demonstrating their products throughout the entire day. “Our goal is to share the beautiful Puerto Rican and Taino cultures and ethnic flavors of our enchanted island with the northwest Florida communities,” said President of NWFBA, Inc. Jose Luis Garcia Ramos. “It’s all about bringing people together.” According to the numbers, the event is doing just that. When the event started in 2008 approximately 500 people attended, but in the past few years, with people coming in from the neighboring states of Georgia, Alabama and Louisiana, it has seen a huge increase in attendance. For the past two years, it is estimated that the event attendance exceeded 5,000 people each year. “We’re happy with the way this event has grown,” said Garcia Ramos. “The outpouring of support has been phenomenal and it’s a privilege to bring an event like this to Fort Walton Beach.” Perfectly aligned with the goal of bringing the community together, another focus of the event is to raise funds for, and awareness about, three local nonprofits. A portion of the proceeds from the event will benefit AMIkids Emerald Coast ( as well as the Okaloosa STEMM Center ( NWFBA, Inc., in partnership with United For A Good Cause Inc., is also working with the National Marrow Donor Program ( “Be The Match” campaign to help encourage individuals from diverse racial and ethnic backgrounds to register and help a patient in need of a life-saving bone marrow or umbilical cord blood transplant. The Latin Salsa Festival event is free and open to the public. It is suggested that attendees bring lawn chairs or a blanket to enjoy the music in the park.
