Nick’s Seafood Restaurant of Freeport, FL will be holding its 5th Annual Kid’s Catfish Tournament, with proceeds benefitting the Choctawhatchee Basin Alliance’s (CBA) Education programs.
July 14, 2015 - Nick's of Freeport will hold the 5th Annual Kid’s Catfish Tournament on Saturday, July 25, 2015. The tournament is specifically designed with the young water enthusiast at heart, offering a new boat, trolling motor and safety equipment to the overall winner. From every entry, $5 will be donated to waterway education in the local school systems via the Choctawhatchee Basin Alliance’s Grasses in Classes and Dunes in Schools, environmental education programs. The Catfish Tournament activities will include: Fish Weigh-Ins, Mullet Toss, CBA Water Steward Pledge and Awards Ceremony.
Restaurant owner Trey Nick is the third generation of the Nick family to operate Nick’s Seafood Restaurant in Freeport (Basin Bayou). Growing up in the fishing community, Trey recognizes the direct relationship between the health of our waterways and the success of the local economy. By targeting kids, the Catfish Tournament reaches the next generation of water stewards and encourages them to adopt waterway-friendly fishing practices.
“The Choctawhatchee Bay has provided for the City of Freeport for generations. I have a lot of respect for our waterways, and I want the youth in our community to share that emotion in the sport”, said Trey. “These young Anglers are the future of our waters. If I can assist in making that connection for them, so they see the importance and value in the resource, then there is a chance that my grandchildren will enjoy the same Bay I grew up loving.”
A huge supporter of CBA, Trey Nick is enthusiastic about the organization’s waterway-based education programs, “CBA does a great job of getting the message out to the youth in our community. They instill in them at a young age the importance of taking care of our waterways, and ways to utilize the resource respectfully. That’s what it’s all about!”
The Kid’s Catfish Tournament prompts the young Anglers to lure in two species of catfish, hardhead catfish and sail catfish, for their chance to win a new boat or cash prizes. CBA will join the Anglers on Saturday at Nick’s to check out what the Choctawhatchee Bay had to offer. In an effort to reach out to the young fisher boys and girls, CBA will invite all the participants to ‘Join the Alliance’, by wearing CBA’s Water Steward bracelets that show they are adopting practices in their daily routines that promote the health and sustainability of local waterways.
