Crafts Happen was started by local mother Mindy Ivey as a mission to bring artistic culture to the Destin area.  Ivey recognized the need for a place for her artistically-inclined son to be creative.

“I have always had a passion for art and crafting,” Ivey said. “My son is really good at creating things, and I saw the need to bring a place to craft, create pottery and learn how to create art pieces to the Destin area.”

Ivey is passionate about art and wants to teach children about the creative process by allowing each child to harness his or her own creative ability. Crafts Happen offers after-school art lessons, birthday parties and summer camps.

“I wanted to create a place that children could come and have something to remember the summer by,” Ivey said. “This is very different than summer childcare because it becomes a nurturing environment for each child. They get to take home something they created, initialed and will treasure.”

The summer programs are every morning and afternoon, or available for a full day. Half-day lessons are $25, and full-day lessons are $40 which includes art supplies. The first try-it-out class is $25, but after that a $50 registration fee will be applied to cover art supplies, projects, snacks, and drinks for the children.

Adults are also welcome at Crafts Happen, and Ivey will cater to each guest’s needs. Adults can create pottery and paint canvases as well as a variety of other projects. They may come with their little ones to the class for an additional charge or check out the center on their own.

Crafts Happen is a fantastic place to have a birthday party. Each child gets to create a specific craft to take home. Ivey said that she is also hosting a bridal shower complete with an ice-cream bar for the guests. They are open to hosting many different special events.

Ivey said that her family prayed about the decision, and were ultimately led to open an art center in the Destin area. Crafts Happen is located in downtown Destin, next to AJ’s and behind the Texaco in a shopping center close to other local boutiques.
