Remember back in the day when health care was a much more personalized experience? Your doctor knew you, knew your family… he was like a family friend. He was familiar with your lifestyle, your activities, the events in your life. When you went to visit him, he was able to figure out what was going on with you because he knew you not only as his patient but as an individual. Your health care was personalized and tailored for you.
Angel Barber recalls those days of personalized healthcare and thinks it should not be a distant memory but rather a vital part of our healthcare today. “Even with the rapidly evolving changes in healthcare, there is still a need for old-time medicine,” she explains. “Along with new technology and skill-sets, personalized one-on-one service remains a very important part of medicine.”
Such is the concept of the Sandestin Executive Health and Wellness Center (SEHWC), a state-of-the-art facility set in a spa atmosphere that provides a one-on-one approach to medicine. SEHWC was developed with the vision in mind of quality health care services with a personalized touch that patients deserve. By analyzing medical records, learning about the patients’ families and stressors, and recognizing patients as individuals, the medical staff at SEHWC gains a comprehensive knowledge of each and every client. They consider not only what is happening with a patient’s health presently but also see their medical needs through comprehensive and changing factors of their lives, based on their own unique health.
“We created SEHWC with the concept of getting back to the way things used to be,” says Angel D. Barber, RN, LHRM, CMPE, and manager of the center. “Back in the day, providers knew a lot about their patients and were an extension of their families. They were available in the evenings and were dedicated to providing on-on-one time with their patients. They took a holistic approach to figuring out what was going on with them.” SEHWC combines this personal level of care with advanced healthcare technology to offer clinical services, on-site diagnostic testing services including laboratory testing and radiology services, preventive health care, physical therapy, and a full-service pharmacy.
“We cover all healthcare needs from urgent care to pediatrics, family practice and internal medicine,” explains Angel. “Our specialists are experts in their fields which include cardiology, orthopedics, pediatrics and physical therapy.”
SEHWC provides routine medical services including sports, school and employment physicals and pre-employment drug testing, urgent care including state-of-the-art diagnostic services, and therapeutic care including physical therapy, chiropractic, and anti-aging cosmetic aesthetic services. But what is also special about this center is you do not have to see one of their providers in order to use their services. “Our lab services are available to clients who see a provider elsewhere,” explains Angel. “The same goes with diagnostic imaging services. Clients can bring an order in. We have a quick turnaround and offer competitive pricing because we have low overhead. We also accept most major insurances.”
Dr. Barrington Owens, a Family Medicine doctor at the center, agrees. “There is a need in our area for same-day or next-day care. We have snowbirds, visitors, vacationers and families, people who have providers back home but might need care right away while they are here. We can see patients for acute needs and issues that require intervention in a timely manner, that day or the next day, and be able to treat them, rather than them having to wait until they get back home. We actually supplement their care.” The center’s full-service pharmacy offers unique care as well by going a step further and making deliveries to the local area.
“When a patient doesn’t feel well, the last thing they want to do is drive to the pharmacy, especially when they’re on vacation!” says Angel.
When you walk into SEHWC, you feel instantly relaxed and welcomed into its inviting atmosphere. The water fountain and soft music will put you at ease, but don’t get too comfortable because you won’t wait long before you see your provider! The center doesn’t have waiting rooms; it has welcome rooms, and the staff is mindful of their clients’ time. “We appreciate you coming in to see us,” says Angel. “Whether you’re a walk-in or you have an appointment, you’re our guest. If we don’t have enough providers that day, we’ll get more. We care about you and your family, your kids, your grandkids. We want our patients to have a great experience here.”
Since its opening in January 2014, the goal of SEHWC has been to provide excellent and reliable medical care to residents and guests On the Coast. Just recently, the center observed its one-year anniversary with a celebration at the facility that featured food, music, and prizes. “It was a networking event that allowed providers, patients and the community the opportunity to meet, to get to know each other and to see the center and all the services and providers the facility has to offer,” explains Angel.
“We wanted people to know they are welcome to come in, see what’s available, and see if we are a good fit for them, even if they’re just curious,” says Dr. Owens. “I saw some new faces. My thought is that if it makes a difference for even one or two people, it was successful.”
“It was a great way to say thank you to our staff, physicians, patients and community for their support of our success during the course of our first year,” says Lisa Rondon, SEHWC’s Business Operations Officer.
SEHWC is located at 400 Audubon Drive in Sandestin Golf and Beach Resort, at the former location of Sandestin Engineering. To learn more, visit them at http://www.sehwc.com/ or call them at (850) 267-6767.
