Kerry Brooks is an independent author whose debut novel, Halcyon Promise, was just released in February. She lives in central Florida and has been visiting South Walton for more than ten years with her husband, two daughters and two Soft Coated Wheaten Terriers. She and her husband are both entrepreneurs and love supporting the many locally-owned stores and restaurants along 30A. Over the years they have stayed in several of the towns in the area, and they love the unique feel of each of the different locales. They are making plans to retire here one day.
Kerry has co-owned a marketing business for the past ten years
with her sister who lives in Colorado. Prior to that, she had a di-
verse career which included co-founding an online learning insti-
tute and holding various positions at a workforce investment board,
a large country club, a municipal bond company and a medical eye
bank. Woven throughout all of these was a passion for writing and
marketing. Kerry’s professional writing portfolio includes
serving as editor and writer for a national e-magazine for
workforce development professionals.
In her words, “I was always passionate about writing and have spent much of my career writing for business. But I always had that itch to write creatively. One day my sister told me to ‘stop talking about it.’ That motivated me to start writing and, after nearly two years, I’m extremely excited about the launch of Halcyon Promise. It has been a surreal experience and I am so lucky to be able to write about 30A when I can’t be there in person.”
Halcyon Promise is the first in the 30A Promise series, a fictional collection about new friends who meet and come together along 30A in South Walton to make a difference in their community. After nearly 28 years being the best wife and mother she knew how to be, the protagonist, Deanna, and her dog Jake find themselves hundreds of miles away and on their own. Deanna struggles with what the future will hold and how she will redefine herself. The book takes the reader on Deanna’s journey along 30A where she forms new friendships and explores beautiful towns and natural coastal habitats as she embarks on her quest for purpose. The dogs of Halcyon Promise are also an impor- tant part of the book and take advantage of the pet-friendliness of South Walton. The back story for this first book focuses on a fundraising event to help a local domestic violence shelter that finds itself at a crossroads.
“The driving force behind writing about domestic violence was the focus that has been placed on it in the media lately,” said Kerry. “I feel much like Mia, a character in the book who is Director of Halcyon Centre – wanting to save at least one person from that pain and suffering.”
Kerry wants to encourage other aspiring authors to simply start writing, saying “some of the best advice I found on this journey was to ‘write every day. And when you aren’t writing, read.’ I took that advice to heart. There were days I spent a few minutes writing and others I spent hours. I was fortunate to be able to spend three weeks over the holidays in South Walton and that inspired me to get to the end.”
In book two of the series the same friends will face new challenges that will bring them even closer. Triple Promise is due to be released later in 2015. When she’s not visiting or writing about 30A, Kerry is an avid reader and loves to travel to new places both inside and outside the U.S. Follow Kerry on Facebook at https://www.facebook.com/kbrooksbooks, on Twitter @kbrooksbooks or online at www.kerrybrooksbooks.com.
