The streets of Destin will be aglow when runners take off for the Luminaria Run to End Domestic & Sexual Violence. This unique twilight run, which benefits Shelter House, has 5k and 9k courses and begins and ends at Bubba Gump Shrimp Co.
“We chose the 9k distance to represent that a woman is assaulted or beaten every nine seconds in the U.S.,” explained Shelter House Executive Director Michelle Sperzel. “The luminarias symbolize how Shelter House and our community partners light the way to a safer place for victims of abuse.”
Now in its fourth year, the Luminaria Run features a course lined with more than 2,000 luminaria bags and winds throughout the Indian Bayou neighborhood. In addition to the usual awards for the fastest runners, the Luminaria Run will also crown the “glowiest” runner. All participants are encouraged to wear reflective gear, glow sticks and anything else that will make them stand out from the crowd!
Children are welcome at the Luminaria Run as are strollers and walkers. This family-friendly event will have a “sweet finish” at Bubba Gump Shrimp Co. featuring s’mores, hot cocoa, cupcakes, music, and more as well as Bubba Gump’s famous gumbo. The adults can also warm up after the run at the hot toddy bar. Several raffle items will be up for grabs, including a YOLO board.
The Luminaria Run begins at 4:30pm on Saturday, December 6 with packet pick up from 2pm to 4pm the day of the race and 4pm to 7pm the day before the run at Bubba Gump. Registration and more information are available at www.shelterhousenwfl.org. Runners will receive a long sleeve t-shirt.
