Emerald Coast Wildlife Refuge
5262 Deer Springs Rd. Crestview
There is a small, little-known zoo in Crestview, FL doing some great things for area wildlife and locals alike. The Emerald Coast Wildlife Refuge volunteers have been busy sprucing up existing exhibits and adding new ones for their animal ambassadors since taking over the structure formerly known as the Sasquatch Zoo. The refuge has also added educational programs and interactive initiatives such as summer camp for children. This addition to the Emerald Coast Wildlife Refuge establishes a presence in the north end of the county while keeping its southern- end rehab facility on Okaloosa Island.
Part of the charm of the Emerald Coast area is the abundance of wildlife found here. Residents and guests often see pelicans drifting across the horizon and dolphins playing in the bay. Rabbits, birds, squirrels, deer and even bear can be spotted in some backyards - especially during the spring and summer when many animals are born. Sometimes an adult animal that is hurt or a baby animal that is orphaned is detected, and when that happens the Emerald Coast Wildlife Refuge is available to assist all Florida native species from owls to sea turtles to whales. And now a zoo for rescuers and the curious among us have a cool place to go visit our planet earth cohabitants!
