Fittest & Coolest on the Coast

Want to be the Coolest Parent on the Coast? Get involved with your kids rather than just
getting your kids involved. Building memories together will leave a legacy of relationships and
an active lifestyle. If you are active already, this may already be a part of your family’s
lifestyle. If you do not see yourself as active, there are ways to get involved slowly without the
need to turn yourself into the all-star athlete you may think you need to be in order to
participate with your kids.

I have noticed there is quite a variety of television shows showing us a great world that is right
outside your window. People travel far and wide to show us fun activities and we have much of
it in our backyard. The better the job the show does at making us feel like we are participating
in the adventure and experiencing what the host is experiencing, typically the more successful
the show.

SPOILER ALERT: The host gets the benefit here and you get entertained but no real
experience. If you weighed 140 lbs, you’d burn a grand total of 67 calories (Kcal), just 17 more
than if you were lying down watching that hour-long episode! Rather than watch adventurers
“survive” dire circumstances, get out and have an adventure of your own with your kids.
Living on the beach and in the sun affords us the ability to play outside a lot. Playing out in
nature burns calories, makes memories, and you might even learn something about nature,
about yourself and about your children. Here are some calorie burn totals for a 140 pound
person:

Activity Calories burned
Sleeping 59
Brushing your teeth 160
Sailing 177
Riding a Waverunner 180
Playing Frisbee 193
Bowling 193
Volleyball - recreation 218
Paddle Boarding 246
Table tennis 252
Cycling - leisure 252
Coaching - team sports 252
Whitewater rafting 270
Walking 3 mph 277
Canoeing 2 mph 286
Basketball - shooting baskets286
Kayaking 290
Snorkeling 312
Hopscotch/dodge ball 336
Gardening 344
SCUBA diving 373
Swimming - moderate 386
Soccer - casual 445
Playing at the water park Up to 600

As a personal trainer with children, I can tell you it is much easier to get your kids active if you
are active. They learn more by what you do than what you tell them to do. Show them the
world of being active and if you have never been, get out and do something. If they are
interested in sports, odds are you can learn something from them or one of their coaches. As a
coach, the best thing I could do for the child was to encourage the parent to “play” with their
kids if they wanted them to become interested in a particular sport. If they are young, odds are
you know more about the sport than they do, so it is easy. If they are older, learn. You don’t
have to be the best, they don’t expect you to be, but they will probably like that you show
interest.

So, there you have it. Be the Coolest Parent on the Coast. Go play with your children, burn
some calories, learn something and grow your relationship with them. It’s cool.
